Wildfire Victims Get ‘Healing’ Tax Exemption from Settlement Payments

Monday, October 3, 2022

Wildfire victims receiving payment from PG&E’s “Fire Victim Trust” will not have to pay state income taxes on those payments with the signing of Assembly Bill 1249 (Gallagher). Senator Jim Nielsen, R-Red Bluff, is AB 1249’s principal co-author.

“The signing of the measure into law was critical for the healing of the victims of the devastating Butte and Camp Fires,” said Nielsen. “I am deeply grateful for the unanimous bipartisan and heartfelt support AB 1249 has received.”

AB 1249 will provide financial relief to wildfire victims of the 2015 Butte Fire and the 2018 Camp Fire by exempting them from paying state income taxes on settlement payments made out of PG&E’s “Fire Victim Trust” fund.
