Senate Democrats passed three proposals along partisan lines specifically to designate California a sanctuary state, to bankroll lawyers for individuals who are detained, and to forbid state and local officials from sharing information with federal authorities. Senator Jim Nielsen (R-Tehama), Senate Republican Caucus Chair, warns that such proposals will put citizens in harm’s way and risk the loss of billions of dollars in federal funding to the state.
“California leaders must protect the safety of our citizens from convicted felons who are here illegally – not hire lawyers for them.
“By making California a sanctuary state and prohibiting law enforcement officials from sharing vital information without jumping through bureaucratic obstacles, Senate Democrats are endangering our families and our communities.
“We cannot afford these ill-conceived policies as they may jeopardize billions of dollars in federal funding. It is time we find common ground with the federal government and make government work for the people.”
BACKGROUND: The three measures are Senate Bill 54 (de León); Senate Bill 6 (Hueso); and Senate Bill 31 (Lara).
