A Monterey County Superior Court Judge placed convicted felon, Eldridge Chaney, Jr., a Sexually Violent Predator, in Yuba County, not his county of last legal residence as the law provides. Jim Nielsen, former Chair of the Board of Prison Terms and Yuba County’s state senator was outraged.
“This is absolutely the wrong decision!” said Senator Jim Nielsen (R-Tehama). “Citizens of Yuba and Sutter Counties must now be more vigilant than ever. There is no guarantee whatsoever that the rehabilitation treatment or security for this individual will assure public safety.”
Despite efforts by Assemblyman James Gallagher (R-Yuba City), Yuba County District Attorney Patrick McGrath, Yuba County Sheriff Steven Durfor and myself to persuade the Monterey County Superior Judge to place this felon in his last county of residence, the judge ignored our request, and placed him in Yuba County where he has never lived.
The exact date of Chaney’s arrival will not be made public. The convicted felon will be monitored 24/7 as ordered by the judge.
“Yuba County and Sutter County residents should not rest assured because of the court-ordered security. Be alert and attentive in the area,” Senator Nielsen cautioned.
